US News ranked the 130 fully accredited medical schools and 26 fully accredited schools of osteopathic medicine to produce the top schools in research as well as primary care. The schools were ranked based on: student selectivity admissions statistics, faculty-to-student ratio, research activity, proportion of graduates entering primary care specialities, peer assessment and a residency directors assessment. Student selectivity admissions statistics was taken from the median MCAT, GPA and acceptance rate from incoming students. Faculty-to Student ratio was based on the ratio of full-time science and full-time clinical faculty to full time students. Research activity was determined by the total amount of grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health as well as the grant funding per faculty member. Proportion of graduates entering primary care specialities was based on an average from 2012, 2013 and 2014. Peer assessment and residency dean assessment was found by asking directors and deans to rate programs on a scale of 1 to 5 on questions regarding both research and primary care; the average of all rankings determined the school’s score.
